Gods of Trivia

Once again WNDC carried away the spoils in what would have been a memorable evening if Ian had not bought a final celebratory round which has meant that it's all bit of a blur. I do know that I awoke this morning to find myself wearing a magnificent Adnams shirt, having decided with the wisdom of four pints that I would wear my trophy to bed in an attempt to impress it's other occupant.

Her : "How impressed were you expecting me to be?"

Me : "Gymnastically?"

Her : "Hang on I'll just go and fetch my pole"

Yeh right... as my daughter would say. Back to the quiz. If the truth be told we came second by two points 61 - 59 to a team of at least 10 (6) and as always it's the one or two killer questions that made all the difference. The answers that were over ruled by those holding the pen. Concorde first flew in which decade - 1960's (we put 70's) , bonus for the year 1969 (1971) . Still the bookbinder concerned redeemed himself with knowing that the Canarie Islands are named after the latin for dog and for being old enough to remember the "Dr Finlay's Case Book" theme tune. Respect.

The winners honourably declined the prizes on the grounds of numerical advantage following our frosty stares and we shamelessly snatched the shirts from the quizmasters hands.

There then followed a heated discussion on Richard Dawkins and his new book "The God Delusion". Should Atheism go out of it's way to show the Theists the error of their ways? Numerically Atheists outnumber many powerful but smaller religious groups. It's time for Atheists to stand up and be counted. We rapidly split into four factions and ended the evening not talking to each other ... bring the weapon of your choice on Wednesday and we shall see who was right...

I wince at the knowledge that I have missed out on an Adnams T-shirt which I might have pressed against my loved one's flesh as the world slumbered.

On a point of order.. it was m'learned friend who came up with Concorde belatedly making it into the air in the 70's.

Like WNDC I arrived home brandishing the newly won shirt(having drunk less, didn't opt for wearing it to bed). Missus not particularly impressed to hear tales of daring do - so tried the "where did Halloween originate" question out on her, knowing that if we couldn't get it right, how could a half comatose wife know the answer. N replied "Ireland" with hardly a bat of the eyelid, before returning to the land of Nodd!

Husband's v wives is a must now!
